Nickel aluminium bronzes for bushings, bearings and rings that carry high loads in corrosive service.

Alloy family

What this family is good at

Strength that holds up in salt spray

Copper-aluminium alloys take their strength from aluminium, and our grades add nickel and iron for higher mechanical and corrosion resistance. The aluminium forms an oxide film on the surface that protects the part from seawater, salt spray and oxidation. The result is a bronze that resists wear, shock and abrasion under repeated loads.

Where these bronzes work

Aircraft landing gear is the typical case, with rings, bushings and bearings that see friction and wear under extreme loads. The same grades go into distributor bodies, screws and forged parts for marine and naval equipment, and into pump blocks and hydraulic components. Oil and gas operators use them for bearings and seal components where galling is a risk.

Four lead-free grades, supplied as bars

NCS AMS 4590 (CuAl11Ni5Fe5, UNS C63020) is the strongest of the four, with a guaranteed minimum tensile strength of 896 MPa and a hardness of 255 HB. NC4 AMS 4640 (CuAl10Ni5Fe4, UNS C63000) serves landing gear bushes and bearings and is compliant with AMS 4640, ASTM B124 and ASTM B150.

CA104 (CuAl10Ni5Fe4) is compliant with BS B23 and BS B2874, and keeps its properties under shock loading and at cryogenic temperatures. NC2 (CuAl9Ni5Fe4) is the naval grade, compliant with DEFSTAN 02-833 and NES 833, for exchanger plates, evacuation pipes and hydraulic pump slippers.

Choosing the grade with you

The right grade depends on the load, the environment and the standard your drawing calls for. Our engineers read the drawing with yours, propose the closest grade and confirm its properties before production. Each grade is in the catalogue with its designations, standards and property data.

01

Nickel and iron additions give these bronzes higher mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

02

Resistance to seawater, salt spray and oxidation, in service on marine and naval parts.

03

Guaranteed minimum tensile strength from 620 MPa (NC2) to 896 MPa (NCS AMS 4590).

04

All four grades are lead-free and compliant with aerospace, naval or British standards, from AMS 4640 to DEFSTAN 02-833.
