Copper-manganese alloys are resistance alloys with a controlled electrical resistance that stays stable as temperature changes, the material of shunts and precision resistors.

Alloy family

What this family is good at

A resistance that holds when temperature moves

A shunt measures a current through the voltage drop across a known resistance. If that resistance drifted with temperature, the reading would drift with it. Copper-manganese alloys are made for this job because their resistivity is highly controlled and depends very little on temperature.

That stability holds over a large temperature range, so the resistance of the finished component can be set within tight limits. Where space is short, a lower-resistivity grade lets you make the component smaller.

Where current is measured

Shunts, current-sensing resistors and precision resistors are the typical parts. Battery management systems use them to sense current in electric battery components. Grids and electrification equipment measure current the same way.

Niclal®, nine grades as strip and wire

Our catalogue files nine Niclal® grades in this family. Niclal® 28 (CuMn6Sn2) and Niclal® 29 (CuMn7Sn2) are copper-manganese-tin alloys. The other seven, from Niclal® 37 (CuMn10Ni4) to Niclal® 47 (CuMn14Ni2), add nickel to the copper and manganese.

Electrical conductivity runs from 3.6 to 6.2 % IACS across the range, the working window of a resistance alloy. Strips are supplied in the H14 temper, and Niclal® 38, Niclal® 43 and Niclal® 47 are also drawn as wires. Niclal® 43A (CuMn12Ni2) is our reference for precision resistors and shunts that need long-term stability of resistance.

Working with our engineers on a resistance element

The grades accept cold forming, stamping, welding and soldering, so the element can be shaped and joined in your process. Send us the target resistance, its tolerance and the operating temperature range of the component. We help you choose between a tin grade and a nickel grade, and we say which forms we hold in stock.
